They account for only 4 % of the EU’s surface area, but they are home to 75 % of Europe’s citizens. In addition, cities consume more than 65 % of the world’s energy and are responsible for more than 70 % of global CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n Since mitigating the effects of climate change depends heavily on action by cities, we need to help them accelerate their green and digital transformation. In particular, European cities can make a substantial contribution to the Green Deal objective of reducing emissions by 55 % by 2030 and, more concretely, offer their citizens cleaner air, safer transport and less congestion and noise.<\/p>\n The “Cities” mission will involve local authorities, citizens, businesses, investors and regional and national authorities in order to :<\/p>\n As set out in its implementation plan, the Cities mission takes a cross-sectoral, demand-led approach, creating synergies between existing initiatives and basing its activities on the real needs of cities.<\/p>\n A first group of cities submitted their Climate City Contracts in April 2023, which were examined by the Commission with the support of experts from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC). In October 2023, following a positive review, the first 10 cities were awarded an EU mission label.
